WILDLIFE & BIRDING

One of the best-kept secrets of Eastern India is its abundance of wildlife and birds. Within Eastern India, there is one region that deserves a special mention for wildlife – its northeastern reaches. Poles asunder from the jam-packed national parks of Central and North India, Northeast India prides itself on providing an authentic wildlife and birding experience.

The verdant swathes of dense forest in Northeast India are home to the world’s largest population of the One-Horned Rhinoceros and the Indian Wild Water Buffalo. Equally noteworthy is the recent estimation that Kaziranga National Park has the world’s highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers. This region also ranks among the top 25 global biodiversity hotspots in the world with a grand total of 106 globally threatened species.

Of the world's 8650 bird species, 1200 of them are found in India, making India's birding checklist twice the size of Europe and North America. Out of these 1200 bird species, more than 850 of them are found in Northeast India, dubbing this region the best area for birdwatchers in the subcontinent. From the moist evergreen and deciduous forests of Dibru-Saikhowa National Park to the marshy grasslands of Kaziranga National Park, Northeast India is home to rare bird species like the Bengal Florican, Ibisbill, and Fire-tailed Myzornis.

To escape the crowds and witness astounding wildlife and birds, visit Northeast India.
